Identifying if crontab is running
I have a one-off script that needs to run as a user, but I need to make sure it isn't running. I have looked at using pgrep to check if a process is running, but is there a better way? For example, I can't check if the script has been run before, I can't check if it is running at the time I check, and I can't check if it is running at the time I change the contents of the file.
The example I have in mind is this:
#!/bin/bash
SOMETHING=1
if pgrep "SOMETHING"
then
#do stuff
fi
SOMETHING=0

pgrep will tell you if a process has been started in the last minute. But it does not tell you if it is running at the time you check.
Cron is the answer here. If you have a directory or script somewhere, you could put that into the crontab. Then the script would not even have to be in the PATH.

You can use a shell with a different command syntax than the default bash syntax. E.g., zsh has a builtin like pgrep. You could use if pgrep...
